Getting Aboard the Forklift
The 3-point dismount is among the keys to keeping operators safe. It is the main problem for maintaining operator safety, even though this is often ignored. For example, a few years ago, at a lift truck rally, a participator carried out the course perfectly at a forklift rally. At the end of his run, he was so thrilled, that he jumped off of his machine and totally forgot to make a 3-point dismount. He failed to win the competition because he judges ended up docking marks from his overall score.

The importance of dismounting and mounting lift trucks is a really serious thing to be covered in training. Additionally, having drivers wear their seatbelts can potentially save their lives in the event of a tip-over. It is truly essential to know that if a loaded forklift's center of gravity moves outside of the stability triangle then a tip-over situation could happen. Trained drivers seldom ever run into a tip-over situation, although, it is very important that they are prepared for that possibility in case it occurs.

Dismount/Mount
The importance of correctly dismounting and mounting any type of forklift, including even a low platform pallet jack is essential to ensuring the driver stays safe. Far too many injuries occur when complacency happens around these equipment. Several of the serious situations consist of: Operator's catching their coveralls or loose clothing when dismounting and can end up falling and wrenching their back. Sometimes, the driver can sprain or break an ankle when they step off of a lift truck. The driver can break an arm accidentally when slipping and falling off of the pallet jack. The driver could suffer from torn shoulder muscles if they slip on floor debris while they are still hanging onto the handhold utilizing one hand.

So as to keep you safe, having 3 points of contact is necessary. Obtaining 3 points could be done with 2 hands and 1 foot or by 1 hand and 2 feet. This stance is precisely like climbing down or up a ladder. Remember to face the machinery at all times. Operators usually have a tendency to jump or hop off the machine or to face away from the equipment and these mistakes greatly reduce the overall possibility of hurting themselves.
