Fuel Storage
In order to be safe, the smaller fuel canisters or the big refueling tank needs to be stored away from the main building or complex. Adding to the safety aspect, it is required that "No Smoking" signs are clearly displayed in the area. Ideally, the fuel tanks should be stored in a safe enclosure which could just be accessed by authorized employees. It is essential for the operator's safety, and everyone they work with, that these safety measures are strictly followed.
To be protected from vehicle impact, the fuel enclosure itself has to be protected. This job could utilize retraining systems like concrete bumpers. Other retaining methods can be utilized. It is also vital to always have a fire extinguisher present at the refueling station. Moreover, anyone who is operating the fueling station is required to be trained and also needs to be trained to safely and effectively operate the fire extinguisher. With regards to the fuel aspect, safety is of utmost importance.
Operator Training
The Occupational Safety and Health Administration requires that all operators using a lift truck must be properly trained. This training covers a classroom portion as well as hands-on training. Once the training sessions have been completed, the person must be tested in order to show that they understand the training materials. A portion of this training also includes the correct method of the refueling process of the forklift. The training also involves precautions involved for the refueling of any unit they might be driving as well as site-specific procedures.
Medical Treatment
Material Safety Data Sheet or MSDS must be located inside all facilities where forklifts are operating. This center will include the MSDSs for all solvents and chemicals that are utilized on site. This would also cover the propane that is used to refuel the unit, together with the acid in the lift truck battery.
MSDSs sheets have to be available for all personnel all the time. If any exposure incident happens for instance, the individual has to be evaluated right away. If any medical attention is needed, to should be given without any delay. Normally, if you are uncertain if medical treatment is required, as a general rule; have a physician examine the injury if you fear it is severe. Better to be safe than sorry.
